Special Areas Curriculum at a Glance
The Art Teacher:
- Teaches Art, Art history, Elements of Art, Principles of Design, creative thinking, problem solving skills, and good craftsmanship
- Encourages experimentation with a variety of media
- Provides a positive outlet where students can express their emotions through art
- Sharpens imaginations and ignites creativity
- Teaches art appreciation
- Promotes self-esteem through the creative process
- Exhibits student art at school and throughout the community
The Music and Orchestra Teachers provide students the opportunity to:
- Sing songs with appropriate tone, pitch, and rhythm with or without accompaniment
- Sing songs representing a culturally diverse repertoire with appropriate expression, dynamics, and phrasing
- Perform on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music
- Read rhythmic and melodic notation using traditional and nontraditional symbols
- Improvise simple rhythmic and melodic patterns and accompaniments
- Learn music vocabulary and describe what is heard in a variety of musical styles
- Know music and composers that represent various historical periods and cultures
- Participate in musical performances on our school stage and at community events
The Physical Education Teacher:
- Teaches students locomotor skills (running, jumping, hopping, skipping, sliding)
- Teaches students manipulative skills (throwing, catching, kicking, striking, dribbling)
- Teaches students four components of physical fitness (flexibility, cardiorespiratory, muscle strength, muscle endurance)
- Teaches students names of bones and muscles
- Teaches students nutrition
Teaches students the knowledge, skills and confidence to participate in health enhancing physical activity throughout their lives.
